Yeah thats the word for almost all Radha Mohan movies, i should say. This man has got the guts to make movies with almost no oomph, or in other words vulgarity. Kudos to him. At no point of the movie do you wince at the dialogues or potrayal. In fact through the movie you find yourself saying " how very true". I was smiling all the time probably because it seemed so very close to heart. The main theme of the movie is " Children teach us more about life than we teach them".

The Plot:

The storyline is too very simple. It is about Raghuraman(Prakash Raj) his wife Anu (Aishwarya) and their daughter Abhi (Trisha). From the time Abiis born Raghuraman dotes on her and never ets her out of his sight lest anyting should happen to her. The scene in which he panicks thinking hot water has fallen on Abi when it is wife who is affected is an example. The single scene jus gives you the jist of the movie. Raghuraman is so very blinded with love that he doesn't think of anything else. But there are parts of the movie that are overdone especially the one where Raghuraman is seen slogging day and night for Abhi's LKG admission.

Abhi grows up, goes to school, and like Prakashraj says, gives him a shock or surprise every now and then. Like she brings a beggar home , Ravi Shastri (Kumaravel) and demands to keep him. Raghuraman gives in to all her demands. She asks to go to school by cycle and he assents after a fight. Follows her to be sure she reaches safe and getrs admonished. Abhi says " I know what i am doing". It sums up Abhi' s Character- Totally practical and independent.

Raghuraman lets Abhi go to Delhi for Mba and she returns with Joginder Singh (Ganesh Venkatraman). She says she wants to marry him. Everyone in the household is very happy but for Raghuraman who jus cannot come to terms with a Singh as his son in law. What follows is a series of events that culminate in a "all is well that ends well" climax.

The first half of the movie is funny inspite of some very silly scenes. The second half is slow and testing at times. It is truly about emotions. Raghuraman's love for Abhi brings himself to assent to the marriage but he realises that her choice is a very good one. Like she says " I know whate i am doing".

The whole movie is told in a sort of narration by Prakash raj to Sudhakar (Prithviraj) whom he meets at a park.

The Cast

Prakash Raj as Raghuraman is just apt. He is turning out to be an asset to any movie he features in. He gets to carry the movie on his shoulder all by himself. He has done great justice to the role. Anything said about his acting will be short of his real performance.

Aishwarya as Anu Raghuraman plays a perfect foil to Raghuraman. As practical as one could be. She steals the show in the scenes towards the end.

Trisha as Abhi Raghuraman is perfect for the role. The character fits her very much. And in the few scenes that requires acting fro her she pulls it off quite surprisingly.

Ganesh Venkatraman as Joginder singh is handsome. And man is he Tall. He jus looks a Sardarji. and acts like one too.

Kumaravel(Chithappa of Azhagiya Theeye) as Ravi Shastri is a excellent choice. His accent is also very good. Kailash Kher's voice doesn't suit him much but he stil pulls it off. His love for Jasbeer Kaur gives room for some humor.

Thalaivasal Vijay as Raghuraman's friend provides nice support.

Vidyasagar's music is worth hearing. Va va En devadaye is a nice song that is played in bits through the movie. Ore oru oorile sung by Kailash Kher is a little too loud but passes for its content. Azhagiya Kili is ahot like Rathiri berathil (anjali) but isn't so nice to hear. Pachai Katre is a good hear. The re-recording in the beginning of the movie is loud. The tribal music doesn't add any feel to the movie.

Dialogues by CP Narayanan and R Subramanian is the basis for the movie. Conveys the right ideas.

Editing by Kasi Viswanathan is crisp in the first half. Maybe in the second half he could have used his scissors to some avail.

Camera by Preetha capture Ooty and Munnar in all its glory. You just wonder why we should go to foreign locales when we have such excellent places in India. The camera jus keeps you chilled in the theatre.

Radha Mohan as yet again given a clean movie, but he could have done well to trim it a little more to suit the audience. But he gets the crticism as weel as the appreciation.

Vaaranam Ayiram tries to show a son's love for his father but ended up being a biography of the son but Abhiyum Naanum sticks to its motive. It showcases a Fathers' love for his daughter in all its glory..

"Grow up father"

Bommalaattam- A review

I am forcing myself to write this review. Reasons being my long absence from my blog and my determination to review all movies i watch.

The Plot:

If i say much about the story here it'll be a give away. I'll just stick to the outline. The story is about Rana( Nana Patekar) a film director. He is an accomplished movie maker and expects perfection from his artistes. He gets annoyed at people who have airs about them. The film begins with him, chucking a heroine out from his movie for her denial to do a scene the way he wants her to. He ends up going in search for a heroine. He finds one in Trishna (Rukmini) and starts shooting for his film. But a lot of unfortunate events take place at his shooting spot and two people die under suspicious conditions. And after the movie is released Trishna dies too. This ultimately points the fingers of suspicion at Rana and he is taken into questioning by the CBI officer Vikram Verma (Arjun). There is Anitha (Kajal Agarwal), a tamil poet who is Vikram's love interest or rather Ex interest who likes Rana's movies a lot and worships him. Ranjitha is Rana's wife and she provides another angle to the already intriguing plot. The movie takes interesting turns and even as u start guessing who the killer could be, you are in for a surprise. This part is really novel if not believable. But in fact i thought it was quite a bold thought to make a film on. A challenge as Rana himself puts it. A challenge Bharathiraja has taken upon himself.

The film addresses a lot of issues about the film industry and the kind of misconceptions about relationships within the industry. Though the Director doesn't totally deny such things he is careful to add that there are honest people and honset intentions as well.

One major let down about the movie is that it looks made for a Hindi speaking audience. the name of the actors, the locations, the dialogues, the lip sync etc. this could have been looked into. In fact in a particular scene Arjun is shown riding a bike with a Maharashtra registration number. Not that u can't drive such a vehicle in Tamilnadu but it defies basic logic. Also the music is totally pathetic. Himesh is a bad composer. The background score adds to the woes of the already irritated tamil audience.

The Cast:

Nana Patekar as Rana is jus pure excellent. He fits into the role like glove. In the scene where he shows his film's lead how to perform a particular scene, he almost outdoes a real director. Though he is a Hindi actor his acting transcends the language barrier. But the lip sync gives the character a very odd feel. Nizhalgal Ravi's voice is a strong point to the role.

Arjun as Vivek Verma does a nice work. For a change he is not bashing up baddies. He looks cool. But his looks have been changed to make him look a North Indian.

Rukmini as Trishna. she is the pick of the lot. She has pulled off her role with ease. She has a nice future and will have to chose her roles to suit her image. A bold decision indeed to have taken up the character.

Kajal Agarwal as Anitha has nothing much to do except show up at intervals and help us show the real character of Rana. She is this guardian angel to Rana. But she doesn't fit into the character of a Tamil poet. it seems ridiculous.

Ranjitha has done a nice work as Rana's suspecting wife.

Vivek has a very small role as a village guy who keeps pestering the director for a role in his movie. There is not much in the name of comedy. infact after some time it seems like a dampener.

Manivannan has done a nice job as a village head who keeps troubling the herione of the movie crew. His role though is a little too crude to digest.

Other small artistes have done nice work too.

Editing could have been a little crisp for a thriller movie.

On the whole a welcome change from the regular run of the mill movies. The movie is different even in it's own genre. Bharathiraaja should be commende for making a comeback. I would say this is a nice offering from the Director of one of the greatest pupl movies of his times Tik Tik Tik. Bharathiraaja may not have exactly made a blockbuster but he has surely proved that he is still a versatile and innovative film maker.

Sa-Ro-Ja - Bull’s Eye

First things first. This movie proves that Chennai-28 was no flash in the pan for Venkat Prabhu. This man is really creating a niche for himself. His movies have that youthful feeling to them, that anyone can identify with it so well. So very local as far as the theme is concerned but the technical expertise is really world class.

Warning: Possible Spoilers Ahead

THE PLOT:

This is about a group of four friends who are in the wrong place at the wrong time. The film starts of with the number starring Yuvan Shankar Raja that says “Lets get Cheeky”- true this one is cheeky. The first few scenes show who is related to whom and in what way and then it gets to the main story. A day or rather should I say a night in the life of these guys. The leads are Jagapathi Babu (SPB Charan), his brother Ram Babu (Vaibhav), Tv soap actor Ajay (Mirchi Siva) and the lovable (yet lovelorn) Ganesh Kumar (Premgi Amaran). Ajay is betrothed to Kajal agarwal and what follows is a out of place song with all small screen artistes dancing to Yuvan’s tune. The film picks up tempo when the four guys start of to Hyderabad to watch the India Pakistan match. Right from the beginning the film revels in the frequent digs and one liners from Premgi. If it was “Enna koduma sir ithu” in Chennai-28 here it is “ Evlavo pannittom itha panna mattoma?”. To add to it there is the Bharathiraja movie spoof element of “Angels of love”(kaadal thevathaigal) clad in white, circling around the girls he sets an eye on. There is more- like the karagattkaran music when the van they travel is introduced, and the telebrands style advertisement when siva explains the van’s features.

The friends then set off to Hyderabad and find themselves in a dilapidated warehouse ( Binny mills again) when they take a detour because of a road block. Suddenly in a succession of events they are stranded amidst a gang that holds Saroja as ransom for 20 crores from her father Vishwanathan (PrakashRaj). Though the quartet manage to escape they come back for a trifling of a reason namely Charan’s wallet. What follows is wild goose chase after the four try to save the girl Saroja. Though most of the film is shot in darkness the shots are clear at least to the basic details. The movies winds up to a twist of a climax. The scene with the booby traps that get the better of the villain gang is a little too far fetched but forgivable.

Jayaram as the Asst. Commissioner is very apt. and more so are the artistes in minor characters. Nikitha is wasted except for a item number.

On the whole the movie is a thrilling experience with a subtle undercurrent of humor running. There is no single serious moment that isn’t made light with gibes.

THE CAST:

Mirchi Siva is very apt. He has a knack of making himself sound funny with his diction. He provides nice support to Premgi. Fortunately there is no particular occasion where his acting skills are really required and he manages to get through unscathed.

Vaibhav is the new find and he is smart. A nice telugu hero material. He has the build for a action hero. And his character offers ample scope for his talent.

SPB Charan is the surprise elemnt. I have never considered him to be a good actor but he really scores in Saroja. Be it humor or pathos, he has given his best and it is commendable.

Premgi is easily the best of the four. Funny all the way. His unsteady love for every girl in town gives lot of room for unending laughter. He carries the humor element of the movie single handedly in some parts.

Praksah Raj as usual is excellent. The very enterprising businessman who has no time for his daughter or family. The scene where he expresses to his wife, the love for his family with a short film of his daughter running in the background is just plain wonderful. In fact though he appears calm throughout the kidnap drama, he breaksdown at a stage.

Saroja (don’t remember the girl’s name though) has a expressive face. And she does her bidding.

Jayaram is the pick of the lot. He impresses form the beginning to the climax. He has come a long way from being the hero to such roles. And he has way to go.

Cinematography is by Sakthi Saravanan. Though almost 85% of the movie is in darkness it doesn’t pain your eyes. The canning is candid. Half the time it is hand held running behind the leads. Nice work there.

Music by Yuvan Shankar Raja is pathetic. Only Dost Bada Dost and Kodana kodi stand out in the lot. Re recording is quite good.

Editing by suresh is a highlight. On spot editing(Avid) is a very difficult art and is handled well.

Venkat Prabhu can now settle down for a breather because he has hit the bull’s eye second time around. Lets hope he keeps it going.

P.S: Sorry if the review is too long. Wanted to scribble whatever I had noted bout the movie.

Jayamkondan- "A Winner"

What do u expect when a raring to go hero, a equally fresh director, and a whole gamut of cast come together- A nice movie thats worth the money.

Jayamkondan is good, no- its better than good. Thank god this review or even the movie watching experience was not spoiled by a bad theater, because it deserves to be seen in civilized surroundings.

THE PLOT:

Arjun (Vinay) comes back to Chennai from London after earning lots of money, from a job that he feels, doesn't give a damn about family and love. He nurtures a grudge at the whole job scenario which prevented him from even attending his father's funeral that his friend Krishna carries out on his behalf. On his way from the airport he meets Brinda (Lekha Washington) to whom he gives a lift. She talk about her admission into MIT and her life time ambitions. The particular dialogue on US, emmigrants is very good. Then Arjun decides to venture into some business with the hard earned money he sent his father, only to find to his shock that all the money he sent his missing. With no clues as to where the money could have gone Arjun is confused until he learns that his father had another wife and that his father had bought a house at Madurai. Incidentally Brinda happens to be his Step Sister. Both get into a war of sorts to sell the house without the other's knowledge and get the money, Arjun for his construction company, Brinda for her MIT admission. This is when Arjun travels to Madurai and meets Poorni ( Bhavana) his childhood sweetheart. Her family lives at the house and she threatens to somehow stop him from selling it. This sparks of another obstacle for the hero. But love blossoms and songs floe out. Enter Guna (kishore kumar) a local rowdy who happens to be making it big in the city and his wife(adhisya). In sudden twist of events the villi, i mean the villain's wife dies in a freak accident and the villain takes Arjun to be the reason. He vows to wreak revenge.

The second half of the movie focuses on the way the bro sis duo get closer though it doesn't exactly happen till the climax. Guna keeps searching for Arjun til the climax. Poorni comes to chennai to sing and dance with Arjun. But the bro sis exchanges are good and the justification each gives for their actions is remarkable. The way fear controls a person is well chronicled with Krishna, when he asks Arjun to leave his home. The film ends on a positive note, with a fight in a remote warehouse( rings a bell), some thangachi sentiment and a piece of messagu.

THE CAST

Vinay as Arjun is good, but his moustache is very irksome. Doesn't exactly suit him. His preformance when he learns of his father's second wife is noteworhty and so are the scenes where he showers love on his sis though in a nonchalant way. This young man ahas a long way to go if he chooses his roles. He is not action stuff though.

Lekha as Brinda is excellent. A very expressive face for all rasas except smile. The stubborn wrong headed character jus fits her like glove and she pulls it off quite well. The final scen jus reduces her to a loving sis to whom her bro is everything.

Bhavana as Poorni is not jus beautiful she is "very beautifu". But her decision to dub for herself proved a let down. She has that local touch to her voice. She doesn't have much to do but to romance Vinay, sing songs, and provide lighter moments. And for god's sake she can't play volleyball- noway.

Kishore Kumar as Guna is good. He has redeemed his Rowdy ways after Pollathavan. and he does jus fine. But he should take care not to let himself get branded as a Villain. The Madurai lingo in the film has a whole doesn't fit anyone.

Vivek as Vinay's friend is funny this time around as a enterprising youth (stil). Santhanam as a village guy trying to broker the house is also humorous. V M C Hanifa has a role to play in the villain's inclusion to the plot. Krishna as Vinay's friend pulls off a coup.

What is the point in using Saranya Mohan- The lovable sis from Yaaradi Nee Mohini as Bhavana's sis in a otherwise brilliant casting coup. All she gets are a couple of dialogues and a song to dance to. Or if she had more, The Editor is to be blamed

Music is by Vidyasagar. The songs in the second half are hummable. " Naan nadanthu vantha" is a romantic interlude. The first half's songs aren't exactly great though the first one is good.

Editing is crisp.

The director R.Kannan has done a excellent work for a first movie and he sure has a carrer in the industry. As Mani Ratnam's assistant his script writing skills come to the fore. He has made maximum use of a big banner -Sathyajyothi Films and Excellent cast.

Government job - what's it like inside?

Long back alagu wanted me to write on a typical govt. job in general or about ISRO work culture in particular . So here it goes. But before I proceed i would like to clarify that Govt job here doesn't refer to all those public sector undertakings, corporations etc etc. And on top of it i don't want to argue on this issue.

Govt job as of today has lost its sheen particularly because it doesn't pay as much as it used to in the bygone era of the British India. But even for ppl who think money or rather remuneration is not a big deal, the challenges that a Govt job offer are fewer in terms of technical problems and more in terms of adaptability.

I joined ISRO because i thought i would have some type of research work to carry out. If not original path breaking research, at least a precious little that i could atleast remotely term as research. But i am unfortunately i cannot term my work here as anything of that sort. All we do in India is REVERSE ENGINEERING Do not come to conclusions from my views alone. Ask other patriots, who read papers and articles in magazines and they will tel u that India is developing Cryogenic Engines and all such new technology for the space age. Initially i used to believe all that crap but now that i am an insider i know better. I can tell u only so much without jeopardizing my commitment to the organization I work for.

So much for the technical side but the real challenge is the adaptability. To get yourself in tune with the govt machinery, requires lot of sacrifices. Hundreds of rules. Some of them so old that they possess no relevance as such in today's scenario. But there is no mechanism to review all that. because no one wants to take the pains.

And the monetary benefit is almost nothing to talk of. A pay commission to study the need for a raise. And they take their own time to submit the report. When it is submitted all that a hike provides is a trifling 3k or 4k. This hike is easily matched by a software firm's yearly hike or even half yearly in some cases if am not mistaken. But NEWS channels inflate figures and project that Govt employees are getting a 21 pc hike above what the pay commission recommends. Bull shit. No doubt the tax payer gets irked. Politicians loot the public money, squander it for their personal use, but to ppl a meagre hike seems a big deal. Thank you.

Govt needs a image make over. Jus advertising that ISRO or DRDO employs cutting edge technology is not enuf. There should be real investment in such areas. India shall talk of becoming a super power. But without the committed contribution of such research organizations it will fall short of any vision.

I quite realise that this post doesn't totally cover all the aspects of a govt job but this atleast represents my contentions.

GREat past week, this week boring already

A post after almost more than a month. Have been really busy. Not that i've started working at office, But my GRE preparation had kept me away from frequent blogging. Anyway i am done with GRE. Got 1340 (570 Vebal and 770 Quants) for the yet uninformed! But this is not about my GRE or my score. It is about my post GRE boredom. I took a week long hiatus from work(supposed) and spent some time at home. A honeymoon period. Had nice food- courtesy MOM. Chauffered my dad's car( if one could call it that) for him and slept well. So not very prolific isn't it? But had to come back to office today. And God could it get any worser. Haven't felt so much out of place. Slept off at office. Am really missing my brief sojourn at home. It should die down. But hope it happens soon. Anyways haven't been doing any movie reviews even for my regular readers. Sorry for that. Will be back on my feet.

This post is just to show people am alive and raring to go. anyway keep watching this space, hoping to see me fill it.

Dasavatharam - intelligent and entertaining

hi ppl. readers who can't bear Kamal hassan may plz skip this review because its all about him. I am not gonna follow my usual template of pros and cons listed separately because i genuinely liked the movie. I will not fail to mention the sagging features though. But they might be very much hiddden, so GO! find them. I am a die hard Kamal fan and so this review is gonna be prejudiced and a answer to all the bad reviews.

So here is a film thats marvellously to the tune of a hollywood movie with so many features of a parallel cinema. Obviously they are not conspicuous but if u fail to see them there is the rest of the movie for u.

For the ordinary (yet the majority audience) man there is a racy movie with all the makings of a edge of the seat action movie. It has a hero who is just a ordinary man. He is a scientist who wants to save a Bio weapon( a la' anthrax) from the hands of the villain. The villain is just an Ex CIA agent who is paid to get the vial from the hero. Throw in excellent car chases, intelligent escapes, underplayed murders and killings and the hero lands in his country of birth-India. From here the film is fast til the interval. After which almost all of the Kamal characters are introduced. Then it is just a mixed bag of emotions, humour(though not exactly rib tickling), and action. Interestingly Kamal has given small roles to almost all his regulars. At the end of the movie when you jus rewind u could notice that there are a hell lot of ppl in there(and lot of implied meaning as well). The film ends with the triumph of good over evil(thats before they reason out the effects of tsunami). Thats it for the normal movie goer.

For the person who sees symbolism, and the basic motive in a movie, here comes the better part. I din't mention the opening part of the movie earlier because it seems to have no relevance at all. But this is where Kamal Hassan brings in the Chaos theory aspect(the initial condition- the flutter of the butterfly), The drowning of the big idol of Govindaraja perumal. be it scientific or religious, it triggers of a series of events that finally cause a great catastrophe or averts another( left to the viewer to decide). Through a whole movie he just shows u how chaos theory really works. By involving seemingly unconnected ppl into the proceedings the movie jus scores in its motive. None of the kamal roles are for the sake of it. I am lifting some of the views below from other reviews so the original writer may plz pardon it. The CBI kamal is the reason for the chase continuing till the end, The tall muslim kamal is the resaon for Kamal's escape fro the police, Tha patti kamal is the one who causes the vial to be put into the idol, the Singh kamal causes the boxes to get changed and helps kamal escape, the jap kamal is the one who saves kamal from the tsunami(and fights the villain kamal), the black local kamal is the epitome of humanitarianism, he saves the couple from the hands of sand mafia. all these reasons seem childish but they fall into place.
some other things that i found very interesting were that though the movie is an attempt to make a action movie for the front row theatre goers, the hero is no super hero. he is gullible. the heroine is annoying. But like everyone said she starts to get on your nerve before the movie ends.
Some of the symbolisms i noted were (this is not all.. the movie has many, even if kamal din't mean to put it in) the death of Vincent Boovarahan which is drawn as a parallel to Nambi's death. Vincent dies to save a child, Rangarajan nambi for the idol. Excellent parallel.
The make up is awesome. Whoever thinks the George Bush get up wasn't gr8, think again. this is probably the best u can do. i especially liked the Fletcher kamal (terminator arnie deja vu',?) jap kamal, and the CBI kamal.
One thing i hated in the movie is the music, and the picturisation wasn't gr8 either.
The movie doesn't have theist or atheist undertones, its just a plain book. Its there for you to read. Watch it carefully.

arasangam- a review

I watched arasangam last Saturday and have been longing to write this review, but could find time only today. Why should I have gone and watched arasangam of all movies? The reason is simple- this is the best one I could find and moreover it is Vijaykanth’s 150th movie. Isn’t that reason enough to be watching it on the night show.

Let me follow this template that I’ve started in the review of Yaaradi nee mohini.

This is the list of reasons why the movie is avoidable
1. Vijaykanth’s role as the police officer.( but that’s the story, so can’t help it).
2. Vijaykanth’s wig(believe me it is horrible, if not funny).
3. The climax. What was a nice movie almost till the end is spoilt at the culmination.
4. Unnecessary song sequences. And music that is pain to the ears.
5. Heroine just for the sake of it (forced to commit suicide). And a cleavage flaunting Canadian police officer(not required but for some oomph)
6. It is a little hard to believe that the villain and a police officer appointed to nab him have the same face. But oh fine.
7. Vijaykanth trying to explain the technicalities of antenna interception of enemy messages and decryption. It was really funny. Hope the real pros bear with it.

Now to get to the better part,

1. vijaykanth has for once chosen a nice story, or that is atleast what I felt. The story is a little intelligent, unlike regular captain movies
2. The direction isn’t exactly bad. It is infact very good at some places. But a trademark action movie with some surprises thrown in.
3. Biju Menon as the villain is the perfect foil for Vijaykanth’s friend also played by Biju
4. Apt dialogues, not the usual fiery political ones that Vijaykanth shouts. There are only few long drawn ones, and they are absolutely in place.
5. Vijaykanth has really underplayed his role. I want to grade it as excellent acting but some scenes are conventional.
6. The film reminds you of vettaayadu vilayadu but is quite different and should be commended for it.

That’s it for the review. On the whole a nice movie to watch with your family for the summer. And a nice 150 for captain. Hail thee!!!

Tag

This is the first time i have been tagged. and lets hope it is interesting.

Last movie seen in a theatre:Yaaradi Nee Mohini
What book are you reading?:Mahatma Gandhi- Essays and reflections by sarvepalli Radhakrishna
Favourite board game: chess( because i can't play it, i like watching people play)
Favourite magazine:India Today

Favourite smells:The smell of wet soil(man vasanai), Flowers in temple
Favourite sound: sound of music, drops falling into water
Worst feeling in the world: having made a decision and seeing it affect someone else
What is the first thing you think of when you wake up? grope around for water
Favourite fast food place:Noodle king Future child’s name: a question too soon. have to ask my wife.
Finish this statement, “If I had a lot of money I’d…” spend it obviously, and save the rest( i am basically a kanjoos)
Do you drive fast? yeah especially when i don't like the person riding with me
Do you sleep with a stuffed animal? no
Storms - Cool or Scary? cool
Do you eat the stems on broccoli? Tamil cinema deserves a special place because right from the days of the first talkie it has mainly banked on the unappeasable hunger for entertainment of tamilians. Mind you thambis(as tamilians are called in the north) are a very appreciative lot and it is quite tough to balance the needs of the mainstream crowd and the very few watchers of parallel cinema. One person who has really managed to please the audience as well as the critics is Bharathiraja. It is not really tough. But it is risky.

Mani ratnam as a director has handled a lot of sensitive subjects like in Anjali, Kannathil Muthamittal etc but when cinema was in its era of change Bharathiraja made the urban man acquainted to the life of the village through his Pathinaaru vayathinilaey. If you watch the film today it may not seem very different from other such films but what we see in today’s cinema is nothing but an intelligent adaptation of the plot as well as the characterization that he conceived. But on first view the film stands apart for its bold and offbeat theme. Bharathiraja has influenced tamil cinema like no one else. His penchant for reality is really appreciable. A director who was known for his movies set in the rural milieu hit the bulls eye with the strikingly urban “sigappu rojakkal”. It may be quite arguable on the part of critics that the artistes tend to overact in his films, but the emotions that were new to people those days were permanently etched in their minds because of such movies.

In spite of his successful beginning his subsequent films were not quite well received and one such grossly underrated movie was “en uyir thozhan”. Honestly this is one movie that I would suggest to anyone who is a lover of tamil cinema, because it proves the point that such quality cinema are also made here. The film is in short a political satire. It highlights the way in which supporters of political parties get absorbed into the evil just like fireflies to a flame. the protagonist of the movie is Dharma( played by Dilli Babu) who lives in a slum with his sister Vadivukarasi. The slang and the poise with which Babu and vadivukarasi execute their roles is really excellent. The hero is a supporter of the opposition party and is very loyal to it. The party has Livingston and Thennavan in it. Thennavan is infact the erstwhile lover of the heroine Rama. She runs away from her home only to be fooled by him. She finds solace with Dharma. They marry and have a happy life. But Dharma is so deep in his loyalty to the party that he doesn’t realize their malice. The film really scores at this juncture. Towards the climax when the party leader decides to use Dharma to win the sympathy and support of people the film reaches the best part. The choice of Charlie as the friend of Dharma and the killer, is excellent. The settings of the murder, the railway track and the way the hero reacts to the killing deserve a real applause. More so is the way the director shows the attitude of the party bigwigs when they print the condolence posters of the heroine crying in advance. Charlie runs into the night crying loud and lamenting the murder of his friend at his own hands. This is where the film seems to say” Greed for power can make you kill even your beloved friend”, that is very wonderfully conveyed in the title “en uyir thozhan”.

The climax is very much suggestive and is left to the people to decide what is to be done.. There are other positives of the movie like Ilayaraja’s music et al. I have not tried to criticize the movie but this an attempt to prompt everyone to watch tamil cinema, because we need not look to the west for quality cinema. Our Culture and type of cinema lies here and we have quite a number of good directors who can make films commensurate with western classics.

Please let me know if you would want me to review any movie in particular. As it is I am not very busy.

TIME FLIES BY

End of another uneventful week. Not uneventful exactly, because i've quit smoking. So for my well wishers out there, some news to rejoice. Believe me it was quite easy this time around. I've tried quitting earlier but have not been really succesful,, but this time something tells me i am gonna pull it off easily. so wait for the anniversary.
I am planning to do some review sorta writing for old movies as well. My focus by the way will be on Tamil movies. You can find a English movie critique anywhere, but i want this blog to be visited atleast for my takes on Tamil movies. And since it is going to be about movies most of you have seen i would be suggesting only good movies that i've seen, liked and appreciated. If i reward ppl for guessing the movies on my list Raja will take the title hands down. The first movie will be " en uyir thozhan"- A film by Bharathiraja (in his trademark tone). So regular visitors please wait for the post on the movie.
GRE preparation is on a all time low. Weekend was not fruitful for the MS plans. anyway i plan to do some catching up.
ok, i hereby promise to make my blogs a lot more interesting to read and comment on.

life is really funny

my life is very comically taking twists and turns that i never would have imagined i would have to face. sample this- i've been longing to work in ISRO ever since i applied for it and now that i work here it doesn't interest me anymore. the person who is most annoyed with my behavior is my dad. he says " krishna you have a wavering mind" with his trademark baritone. what he realised earlier" the fact that i would not fit in this establishment" , i realise now and it is too late to make amends. i am advised by everyone to stay cool and gain experience. but i cannot tell them that i am well experienced in sitting idle, doing nothing like i am presently.

if this is not enough my love life which never really took off seems to have crashed totally. i fall head over heels over a girl and she sez am not interested( refer to my earlier blogs), but another girl who is quite young to be my sister sez she is interested in me. Ah! wat an irony? and this time the advice i get is " நீ நேசிப்பவர்களை விட உன்னை நேசப்பவர்களை நீ ஏற்று கொண்டால் உன் வாழ்கை சந்தோஷ்மாக இருக்கும்". but unfortunately am not interested. poor girl! she would be going through the pangs of rejection just like i am. i can sympathise for her. but to aquiesce her is far from possible.

ok i know this is another unnecessary post. anyway just trying to keep blogging, so that i don't lose touch.

Yaaradi nee mohini- a review

Ever since I’ve started reviewing movies, my mind has turned highly critical of films that lack any kind of logic or substance, so please pardon any outbursts at bad cinema.
I prefer to always list out the let downs of the film for the benefit of prospective audience. And if at all the reader is not daunted by these factors, or it is to his/her liking please go on and read the positive aspects and enjoy the film.
Reasons why I did not like the movie (and why you may/may not like it too)-
· The theatre playing the movie had a really great ambience with people having cigarettes and liquor bottles in their hands, with only the faces of artistes visible above the heads of the ever shouting crowd.
· The theatre also featured DTS ( disgusting terrible stink or sound)
· It is high time Dhanush stops playing the wayward youth out of jobs and at loggerheads with his folks. It is getting stale, though the handling of the father son relationship is a little better.
· The movie in general is too lengthy. In the sense that it packs a lot of things into it. The first half especially. It gives you the feeling of having seen a series of movies.
· The music is not for the ears of connoisseurs. It has a pair of songs like oh baby and engeyo partha nyabagam that will be chartbusters with the latter reminding you of the enthan uyir thozhi song from the comic scraper Winner. The remix of the yesteryear hit song palakkattu machanukku from Vietnam veedu is hard on the ears. More so is the burlesque imitation of Shivaji Ganesan by none other than our Dhanush. Shivaji put to shame.
· Karthik Kumar as the friend of Dhanush is like always, the friend who abnegates his love for his pal. But in this case in a slightly different way. And for god’s sake who asked him to dance. He has to either stop dancing or go to dancing classes. More so are his facial expressions, which are out of place many a times.
· The editing by Kola Bhaskar is fine. If the final product after cuts is this, then I could imagine the whole film.
· Dhanush should change his diction. It is getting repetitive. Especially his diatribe at Nayanthara.
· The representation of the Brahmin household is disgusting. There are places when you feel uneasy at the childish representation.
· Nayanthara is ok as the software professional but as the Brahmin girl she is far from ideal.
Now for all those readers who have come so far here comes the better part
· The casting coup is choice of Raghuvaran, Nayantara’s sister( a nice choice- she provides most of the comic moments in the second half).
· The second half of the movie is funny, with lot of light moments.
· The film ends in the ‘and they lived happily ever after’ style- this is for the ppl who favor sweet endings.
The film as a whole is watchable if you want a selvararaghavan story packaged in candy floss style. Just a simple warning, do not indulge too much into the film and please don’t go to the movie with high expectations form Nayantara ( I think you know what I mean).

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING JOAMON

I've always considered myself to be a JOAMON- Jack Of All Master Of None. Don't know why the feeling is always overpowering. Probably many more ppl think the same way. Whenever i get the thought , my belief is shaken by absolutely ruthless confrontation by pros' in any field for that matter. Am insulted to say the least when i venture to talk a lil bit too much. The idea of buliding up some stories makes me very vulnerable to attack from such predators who take pleasure in devouring on such unassuming small time joamons'. I am not genereally a person who tries to show off but ppl around me sometimes make me do that. when i pick up the paper each morning to do the crossie i always try to outdo my record for the previous day. But i end up wanting. But for lesser mortals it may seem like a great achievement even to try solving it. Whwn they encounter someone who is better than me i get glance that say" and u thought u knew everything". this almost always happens. Am no way responsible for it. Probably when ppl give u adulations that u don't deserve it is better to say" i don't know". how difficult is that? U jus start imagning what he or she would think bout u and stuff like that. Chuck it. Be bold euf to accept ur shortcomings. For instance u meet up with a friend after a long time and u don't happen to remember his name. The matter reaches its peak when he offers to give u his number. U can't save it in ur mobile since u don't know his name. U could as weel save it as " skool friend met on tuesday." or " the guy who played soccer with me at skool". but would it not be easier to say " sorry i don't remember ur name" but don't do it at the end. do it right at the beginning. After all " to err is human".

Vellithirai- a review

Watched the tamil movie Vellithirai yesterday. Another movie that chronicles the sufferings of cine artistes. The first half of the movie is extremely good. The director has really enjoyed shooting the movie. Prakashraj is d perfect foil for Kannappan alias DILEEPKANTH and a better role is M S Bhaskar as Ramgopalsharma. Though it is a bit cinematic, the tantrums of the stars are shown well. The problem with the movie is that the director seems to have tried to make the film both commercially and critically acclaimed. My opinion is that there is no scope for that in the tamil film industry. There is one dialogue which caught my fancy-

"Cinemala rendu paer thaan, onnu vaippu kedachavan

innonnu vaippu kedaikkathavan"

The perfect way to sum up an industry infested with artistes who think anything goes with ppl. but mind you once ppl get a taste of good cinema ur tenure ends. But ppl don't seem to want to get out. A special mention to "Thotta" a movie i saw recently. one of the worst movies i've seen in recent times. How stale the plot could get? Yet another gangster movie. Directors plz grow up. If u want commercial success u can as well direct erotic movies that are a different genre. Plz dont' dirty the mainstream.

Getting back to the review, Prithviraj is just wonderful but he reminds u of the karthik of Mozhi. Especially the scene where he comes to know that his story has been stolen. U can imagine the sorrow if ur intellectual property is stolen. Gopika is ok. Not much of work to do though.

Lakshmi Rai in a small but significant role. The climax is a bit contrived and lifted froma english movie but it really winds up the movie well. In a jist a movie which takes a dig at d cinema industry at the cost of commercial success. good work by the script writer.(hez a malayali. and with due credits to " udaynannu thaaram"). Watch the movie. It is worth the effort.

FRUIT DAY

Another boring post. God am so much outta ideas. Ok this one is for those health consciuos ppl out there. This is general a guide to fruit eating. ha ha. Sounds funny ain't it? Anyway u've to bear with it. Gandhiji used to eat fruits nuts and milk. So i thought if we try out the same we could be like him. Just kidding. There is only one mahathma. Now getting to the point- We are used to eating fruits after very sumptuous meal or when snacking. It is a very bad practice. Experts say that fruits must be taken on empty stomach. That means early morning. That's especially in the case of banana or watermelon. One tends to visit the bathroom after having a hearty meal and gorging a banana. it is suggested that u take whatever fruit u wish in the morning. My recommendation would go to an orange. That is because my daily breakfast includes one. An orange and 2 slices of bread. Believe me it really helps. I've lost some 2 kg and it really feels good on the tummy. It is also better u take a fruit as a whole, not as juice. And if u insist on taking it as juice( i believe ppl are so ,lazy to peel off n orange and eat it) make sure u mix it well in ur mouth wid ur saliva(sorry). It helps a lot in digestion. Also plz avoid cooking fruits. I don't think ppl do that generally but it removes all the nutrients from the fruit. There is some really biological reason which i don't want to get into. And coming to the most important thing- Fruit day. This is a day on which u live only on fruits. I've not yet tried it yet. Am gonna try it tomorrow. Hope i don't get hungry between the fruits. And believe me the fruit i am mentioning is not " palapazham". Probably apples and sathukudis. I'll post another blog when my experiment succeeds.

the mahatma

i am sure that this post o mine wil not be very much welcome, not that my other posts were recieved with a thumping applause. but i have always wanted to write bout the mahatma. to al those gandhi haters out there please stay out and try reading "my experiments with truth". if i've started jus worshipping him after reading the book then it will surely bring about a change in you too. this post comes as a reply to the accusations on gandhi from my friend even today. many ppl argue that gandhi was jus as bad as all of us and doesn't require any adulations. but they fail to see the fact that he was determined to bring about a change in himself before changing the society. to everyone's information when he took up the cause of fellow indians in south africa he was a practising barrister and was doing quite well to sustain his lifestyle. but the great man in him was more authoritative and it finally got the better of him. ppl also argue that he tried to force his wife to do things that she din't want to. infact when he realised how stupid he had been he had the heart to ask for forgiveness. and this character of his won him several fans. infact wen his wife was ill and the doctor advised that she should be given meat tea he blankly refused but added that he would surely allow it if she wanted to have it. the perfect partner that she was to him, kasturba refused and stil she lived. his devotion towards his father was the mainstay of his childhood and the way he nursed him would bring tears to any eye.

inspite of all this some critics still blame gandhi for having ruined the country. did he ask you to fight amongst urselves? did he ask you to kill ur bretheren? all he asked was peace. it seems that ppl identify themselves to be different from others by hating the mathma. if u blame him and praise bhagath singh or subhash chandra bose u will be praised as a very strong and powerful person. strangely to uphold gandhi's teachings, one requires much more of grit and strength. not physical but mental.

one request to all those ppl who think gandhi was india's worst leader, please try to know him before u blame him. he is a lot more than wat we know. if gandhi had been alive today he would not have tried to stop u, he would have been happy that u vent ur anger on him rather than someone else. by suggestions for books on gandhi and the indian freedom struggle- "my experiments with truth"( try to read it in ur local language) and "freedom at midnight"(by dominique lapierre). we owe much more to a man who dedicated his life for the nation. leave comments.

Black eyed peas and illayaraja present elephunk theme

There is this song from the famous band black eyed peas called elephunk theme that caught my fancy. It has been around for quite some time now but I heard it only a couple of months back. This song is a nice rap with some gud beats. Wat comeas as a surprise is d way the tamil song has been remixed. I being a film buff was really surprised at not being able to identify the root song. I thot it was some obscure bhagyaraj movie song. D ‘oomph’ factor made me decide. But I ran a check on the song and at last thnx to some other bloggers found that the root song “unakkum enakkum arambham” is from the ‘devotional’ movie ‘Sri Raghavendra’. It really bowled me over. This song is picturised on sathyaraj I guess. He is this sultan or rather some muslim ruler in d movie. But kudos to bep they’ve done a really gud job. D hip hop as a interlude. janaki’s voice is really very sexy in the literal sense coz dat song requires it.poor Malaysia vasudevan’s part is removed. Infact I don’t remember listening to the song in d movie. Probably the makers removed it too. I suggest this song to all those ilaya lovers out der. a matter of pride to see that this song has been remixed. But am not sure if raja wud be really happy. Probably that’s wy the bep removed it from their release. Anyway listen to the song or rather watch it here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KIEh7R5EQo

The video is a lil stupid. But as is my case the thought of sittin at home doing nothing drives me to write blogs. Atleast something to do.
But topics are very hard to strike upon.
I thought I will write bout the earliest realtionship of this world. God created a girl and a boy and man found so many relationships for them. Kudos. Tribals and stone age men take note.
I take the liberty to categorise the realtionship into some categories

1. A guy and a gal in love. Sorry I can’t help it. This is the first thing that comes to one’s mind. The characteristic features of this would be very commonly seen in beaches. The gal sitting on the guy’s lap. Or the guy sleepin on her lap. The duo exchanging tokens of love inside makeshift tents made of duppattas. Atleast they cover something up . Holding hands in a style that is characteristic of each couple. Their hands reaching the most inaccessible places of the other’s body ( sorry for being so crude. But tis true ). Lovers don’ttake any offence. U may grade this as just a blog from a lovelorn youth but this is very nuch true. I would be really glad if u don’t belong to this group.

2. The sorta mother son relationship or a father daughter rel. This is truly very divine and I shall not delve deeep into it. But as everyone says there is no match to a mother’s love. But to say the least this is the only relationship that man is known to have respected for ages. Even by the men who crawled to the homo erectus( the erect man).

3. Brother and sister. This relationship arises outta the mother’s womb. All that apart there are also self proclaimed bro sis pairs. I shall not talk much bout this not to earn thei wrath. But hteir activities sure doesn’t stand testimony.

4. A husband and wife…. This is in a diff league from the lovers coz all husband and wife couple aren’t in love exactly. They are probably victims of situation(santharpathin kaithigal). Anyway they are married beget children and raise them. A life that is drvien by rules. Wife respects husband does household chores and all that. Whatever may be said bout the changing scenario but I still think this is the ground reality and it’ll take aeons to change.

5. Friends. This is probably the only rel that isn’t governed by rules and regulations. All holds barred. Friends make their own rules. And as film makers say friends can always become lovers. I do accept. Lovers start of as friends to escape the public eye and if the relationship doesn’t work out they split as “friends”. Avery safe term to use.

That is all I can think of. But to be honest there are ppl who cannot be categorized into any of the aforesaid sections. And they all shall be cald as “ oru ponnu oru payyan(a girl and a boy)”.
Leave your comment.

Disclaimer: the author does not endorse the views. madras is wat it has been and rather wat it shud have been. a change in name may not make much of a difference. but our tamil enthusiasts thought it right to change the name. no way out. but madras's fame comes through ages. probably the first seat of british power. wat started of as a three square miles land for a fort has now grown into one sprawling city. proud to be a madrasi(or chennaiite). i've been in this place for atleast 18 years of my life. except for a brief stint in delhi.on a careful comparision, for a madrasi delhi is stil alien. that is wat makes india diffferent. everytime u go outta ur state u feel outta place.
madras has made me wat i am 2day. i've seen its development atleast in my area. it has grown from a barren land to a concrete jungle.
wat makes madras stand out is that the population is ethnic. people here mix into the stream of tamils(thambis) and become tamilians. i am a kannadiga and i lov tamil more than kannada. the reason is dat am in madras.
this city has seen one of tinsel town's greatest icons move uo the success ladder. we boast of bollywood but the fact that shivaji the rajini flick has had the largest opening for a indian film is unequalled.
i've had the privelege of having visited most of madras. i was brought up in tambaram and kk nagar. i did my schooling in island grounds ashok nagar and gill nagar. i've also been in adambakkam nanganallur and adyar. by madras's standards this is not much.
madras is growing both economically and in size. everyone around madras takes pride in saying that they live in chennai. such is the glory.
long live madras

RELEGIOUS TOLERANCE AT ITS PEAK

Turn on the tv and u can see all the news channels playing the most disgraceful video of taslima nasreen being attacked by a bunch of hooligans.
Where is India heading to? We have seen 60 years of independence but is this all we can pride ourselves on. India is supposed to be a secular country wer all ppl enjoy freedom of speech, as long as it doesn’t hurt religious sentiments. Lets go on a nostalgic trip. Right after independence india was being torn into two in the name of partition. Now india is secular supporting all relegions. But can’t we see that religious tolerance is only among a class of ppl.
When a student of baroda sketched nude goddesses his act was condemned by the allegedly extremist hindu outfits of kar sevaks and shiv senaiites. It is only natural of any hindu to condemn the act and no fault can be found in this. But the fact that the college principal sided with the student is very much unwarranted. In turn the blame was put on the protesters saying that they were not tolerant enough(please note this).
And there is our M.F.Hussain who is so (in)famous for his representation of hindu deities in his nude canvases. His art is to be appreciated but not at the cost of other religion’s subjects hurting theor sentiments. But again the bottom line is that hindus are not tolerant enough(please note this too).
Lets take now the case of the dutch cartoonist who made a mockery of the prophet. very condemnable indeed. And it was followed by wat muslim nations are best at--- religious FATWAS. So be it. But their act is always warranted and wy aren’t they considered intolerant??
Also taslima and salman rushdie’s case they were threatened to death if their views were not regretted. And they fled. All muslim nations issue FATWAS at their will. As if it is a passport. They aren’t so tolerant afterall.
And Christians. Take the case of the DA vinci code. The film was not allowed to be screened in india unless Sony pictures carried a disclaimer stating that this work is purely fictitious.all this from the ppl of a religion who are considered very tolerant.
But all said and done hindu mythology is tampered with and hindu deities portrayed in all ill health in movies. When hindus protest it is a mark of intolerance. Wy should we be taken for granted.
Wy this double talk?
I do not mean to kindle religious tension but it sure requires some thinking. And it is high time filmmakers stop showing hindus in wrong light and muslims as terrorists always.
Leave ur comments. It will bring a smile to the author. and please pardon any errors in the syntax. the views are more important

BACK WID A BANG

an update after a very long time. i don't expect u to have waited wid bated breaths for this coz am no J.K.Rowling in an hotel gulping away champagne and trying to finish off a series of harry potter books. jus a
casual bored guy trying to feed his thoughts on others.
i got placed in isro. now that may be old news for many and half of u wud be really tired of me telling dat again and again.but i really see this as a sort of win after a race wid lotta hurdles.
i shall not give u d details and stop u from reading this blog. d interview came as a welcome relief coz i din't really want to join maruti wer i got placed thro campus. some jinx seemed to have been placed on me in clg. no company allowed me to sit for placements(or rather the placement cell of our clg, i hate dem for dat). the only interview for which i honestly prepared wanting to get placed was isro. the reasons being twofold
1. i din't wanna join maruti
2. i wanted to do some research(seems odd isn't it?) rather than filling excel sheets in maruti(for ur info dat is wat GETs do in any automobile company for dat matter).
the interview was rather harsh to say d least. ten ppl around me trying to drill me for any mistakes i make. a single slip of tongue and they wud have u by the collar. probably i did well, though that was not wat i thot wen i finished with the interview.
then came the most agonising period of waiting. i was in a dilemma. a fifty fifty situation rather. on one hand a job i din't want to take, on the other hand a uncertain job the result of which was painfully taking longer than i expected. to add to my woes my family was least supportive. my dad wanted me to go for maruti and get settled. he was carried away by the money factor. but i din't budge. thanx fer comin here).

now fer some serious stuff. d whole idea of placements in a clg such as mine is being misinterpreted. ppl think its diff to get placed in a gud company(now how do ya gauge dat?).
my one interview experience is a antithesis(gre influence don't mind).

encouraged by vichu'z interview experience here goes mine.

we had no written test at maruti(thank god). d irony bein dat i'vent cleared one as yet. d gd was a pointless meandering cacaphony(aha defines it perfectly). infact i din't know wat to say in d whole crap talk and den suddenly a voice shot up. dat was me. probably my inner subconscious mind was bent upon securing a job and jumped to d occassion. my talk was a barrage of points so shamelessly lifted from others and refined to be presented in a brand new fashion in d disguise of quality points of my own. all of a sudden i was so animated dat i put up some gud for nothing, least relevant facts bout my wud be company to d panel and d guy was impressed. probably he thot i had done my homework(watever made dem assume dat). in fact i had stolen dat from a guy who had done his project at d same place. poor fella.
gd ends..........
wait fer d results.
i was plannin to go to d snacketeria wen all of a sudden my name ringed in d placement department. i was to go in first for interview..(my stomach was growlin). all dis time i was unaware of d simple fact dat i din't even have my cv . only my certificates so obsolete dat one mentioned me as having won a singing competition wen i was at d matured age of 10(does add up to my credentials. doesn't it?..). to top it all i din't even have a tie(to look d real executive for a job on a shop floor. all greased up huh??). a very considerate placement representative came to my rescue by givin me his tie which was at d least a match to my shirt. i was settin some new rules by wearin a dark shirt and a light pant(a strict no no in d interview sector. my plans of a job go down d gutter..)
all done i was waitin fer dem to call me....

k will continue in d next blogg. jus to make sure u come bak- d interview experience is all the more comic if not impressive.
